About Us:

The Somali Rowing and Canoe Federation (SRCF) is the national governing body for rowing and paddling sports in Somalia. Established to promote and organize water sports, we aim to inspire a new generation of athletes, enthusiasts, and communities.

As Somalia reconnects with its coastal and riverine heritage, SRCF brings an innovative and inclusive sport to the forefront — rowing and canoeing. We’re working from the ground up to introduce and grow this sport for all Somalis, regardless of background.

What Are Rowing and Canoe Sports?

Rowing and canoeing are exciting water sports that involve propelling a small boat using oars or paddles. They are Olympic disciplines practiced both recreationally and competitively around the world.

Rowing involves athletes sitting in a boat and using oars attached to the vessel to move backwards through the water in perfect rhythm and coordination. It builds endurance, teamwork, and strength.

Canoeing (including kayaking) involves paddling a lightweight boat using a single-blade or double-blade paddle. It can be done on rivers, lakes, or at sea — for speed, exploration, or enjoyment.

Both sports are accessible, promote fitness and discipline, and connect people with nature. As Somalia reconnects with its rivers and coastline, rowing and canoeing offer new opportunities for youth, communities, and athletes to thrive through sport.

Our Mission
We are a people-centered organization promoting rowing and canoeing for all Somalis — with a special focus on girls and persons with disabilities. We create safe, inclusive paddling opportunities that build confidence, community, and athleticism while celebrating Somalia’s deep connection to water.

Our Vision
To establish a nationally recognized platform where rowing and canoeing drive inclusion, empower girls and persons with disabilities, and foster unity, resilience, and pride among all Somalis through equitable access to water sports.

Strategic Objectives

  1. Increase regular participation across all regions of Somalia
  2. Develop Somali athletes to compete at regional and international levels
  3. Establish rowing and canoeing centres in key water bodies across the country
  4. Build strong governance and leadership structures to support long-term sustainability

What we do

Background

Somali Rowing & Canoeing  Initiative – Promoting Youth Empowerment and Peace through Sport

Somali Rowing & Canoeing Initiative was first conceptualized and launched in 2010 by Mr. Said Haid, our current President and a Somali diaspora member based in Sweden. Inspired by his passion for water sports and his commitment to youth development, Mr. Haid began working to introduce rowing & canoeing as a meaningful form of youth engagement and peacebuilding in Somalia.

What began as a modest awareness campaign targeting Somali communities abroad has now taken root in Somalia. In 2024, Mr. Haid officially established a rowing & canoeing training program in Mogadishu, with a particular focus on female youth inclusion. The program currently supports a growing team of young Somali girls, providing them with structured training, mentorship, and exposure to non-traditional sports.

The initiative aims to:

  • Promote peace, discipline, and teamwork through canoeing & rowing
  • Create safe spaces for youth, particularly girls, to grow in confidence and physical health,
  •  Strengthen community resilience and cohesion through inclusive sport activities.

As Somalia continues to rebuild its social fabric, this grassroots sports movement offers a unique opportunity to engage youth in positive and transformative ways
